Terrible and Joyous Writer’s Life by Ricky George

Bound by word counts and job posts

No one ever told you about pay rates

Hemingway didn’t say shit about cover letters

He didn’t say that once you see ‘unfortunately’ you stop reading the emails

Countered by the joys

Acceptance letters and paid invoices

But you don’t focus on those

No matter how much praise

No matter how many bills you pay

With your words

You’re a fraud

You’re nothing more than a pretender

Screw your degree

Screw your good reviews

Screw your income

The writer’s life tells you how to feel

Bound by word counts and job boards
